3D Animator Adrian Chan brings his vast experience – from projects including Harry Potter and The Chronicles Of Narnia – to SAE London, and concludes: great course, great staff, great students!
Adrian Chan is a 3D Modeller at Moving Picture Company and has worked at many prestigious companies, including Anthem FX in Canada. His list of credits contains some of the most high profile films and TV series you could imagine, including Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, Final Days Of Planet Earth, Masters Of Science Fiction and the forthcoming The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Adrian recently gave a special guest lecture to students of 3D Animation at SAE/Qantm London and shared a great deal of his experiences working on some of the biggest film and television projects out there. Looking back on his past projects he offered advice on putting a good show reel together, detailed some of the job opportunities available in the industry and offered some tips on creative modelling/texturing workflow in a business environment.
Adrian also showed some work from his current portfolio, explaining the techniques used in each and the real-world projects they were part of. He then talked about his work at MPC as a modeller, what the CG workflow consists of, what the roles are in the workplace and who does what in a typical job.
Adrian was also impressed with the course and facilities at Qantm/SAE. 3D animation involves many specialities – modelling, texturing and materials, rendering, rigging and skinning to name a few. The 3D Animation course at Qantm/SAE is one year long and gives students time to study all aspects of 3D production, and also to develop their style and specific areas of interest.
“The course offers the students a good range of skill sets that are very current to what is being used in the studio,” says Adrian. "A course covering as much as possible in 3D is important. And in this industry, being a bit of a jack of all trades is useful, especially when starting out your career in smaller companies."
Adrian hoped to pass his experiences on so that “the students gain a general idea as to how the 3D industry works, the roles we play, and some tips on preparing their show reel when looking for a job. They will have a good perspective on what lies ahead for them in the 3D industry.”
“It was also great meeting the staff and students and gaining the some knowledge on the educational side of the industry.”
